A long range, low power wide area network specification intended for wireless battery operated things, LoRaWAN is being hailed as the key to the future of the Internet of Things. It’s design enables communication between low-powered devices and internet connected devices over a large range wirelessly. Most suitable for public networks to avoid collision problems, LoRaWAN networks can be rolled out by entrepreneurial operators due to the shared cell tower infrastructure, giving innovators in IoT a suitable network. Additionally, innovative network operators have been given a headstart on the mobile carriers.
LoRaWAN is built on top of LoRa technology, which in public and private networks can provide a far larger range in coverage than current cellular networks, thus providing a solution for serving IoT applications powered by batteries. Allowing smooth interoperability between smart Things, LoRaWAN gives freedom to the user, enabling Internet of Things to be rolled out.
LoRaWAN operates at three power levels, allowing applications from meter reading and pest detecting to tank monitoring and coin cell battery powered wearable devices. The highest power level of 1W operates up to a radius of 25 miles, sometimes up to 100.
Worldwide, LoRaWAN is already being implemented, for example Pixel Networks, an IoT network and solution provider, has teamed up with Actility to provide Hong Kong’s first LoRaWAN IoT network. Public and customer’s own outdoor and indoor gateways will be used to allow virtual private LoRaWAN networks. The implications of the deployment of this LoRaWAN network include smart building applications where EV parking, temperature monitoring and smart lighting can be implemented.
